Macaranga depressa (Műll.Arg.) Műll.Arg.

Shrubs to small trees up to ca. 14 m tall and 13 cm dbh, reproductive from 2 m tall and 1.5 cm dbh. Twigs solid, glabrous to densely hairy (usually long simple hairs). Stipules ovate to triangular, usually semi-persistent, erect to spreading, (almost) completely surrounding the twigs, 6-18 mm long by 5-11 mm wide. Petioles glabrous to hairy, up to 23 cm long. Leaves alternate, peltate, 3-5-lobed, 13.5-34 cm long by 9-30 cm wide, length/width-ratio 0.89-1.63; secondary veins 8-23, ending in the margin; central lobe 6.5-24 cm long by 4-10.5 cm wide, lateral lobes 1.5-17 cm long; leaf base truncate to rounded, peltate margin length 1-4.5 cm; leaf margin with glands; leaf upper surface glabrous to hairy; leaf lower surface hairy, not or sparsely gland dotted. Staminate inflorescences branched; flowers clustered per bracteole; bracteoles with entire margin. Pistillate inflorescences branched; fruits 8-11 mm wide, 4-5-locular, with glandular patch on each carpel wall, developing into horn-like appendages.

Ecology: Collected up to ca. 1500 m altitude. An early successional shrub or small tree species found in disturbed sites in primary and secondary forests.

Distribution: Found in Sumatra and Borneo. In Borneo found throughout the island.

Notes: This species is subdivided into three forms: (1) Macaranga depressa (Műll.Arg.) Műll.Arg. forma depressa is found in Central and South Kalimantan and can be distinguished from the other forms by its usually short hairs on twigs and leaves, small 3-lobed leaves, with short angular lobes; (2) Macaranga depressa (Műll.Arg.) Műll.Arg. forma glabra Whitmore is found in Sabah and Sarawak and can be distinguished from the other forms by usually having glabrous twigs and petioles, more deeply dissected, usually 5-lobed leaves; and (3) Macaranga depressa (Műll.Arg.) Műll.Arg. forma strigosa Whitmore is found in Sarawak, West-, Central- and East Kalimantan and can be distinguished from the other forms by its prominent long strigose hairs on twigs, petioles and leaves, shallowly 3-lobed leaves.
